The iPhone is rigged with plenty of bells and whistles that make it the well-oiled machine that we all know and love. Combing through the Settings app is usually a good idea for first-time users, if only to explore the many settings and features you probably didn’t know existed. For instance, you can set a schedule so your iPhone automatically shifts to dark mode for more optimal nighttime use without having to endure the black background in the daytime. With a bit of effort, you can also enable voice control and use it to unlock your device without having to use FaceID or enter your passcode.

Usually, newer iPhone settings come with a short blurb underneath explaining what it does when it’s turned on or off, which can be incredibly helpful especially if you’re a new user. However, there are several useful features that don’t come with brief onscreen descriptions that may still be unfamiliar to you. One example is the “Raise to Wake” feature.

The iPhone’s Raise to Wake feature, explained

Raise to Wake, which made its debut as part of the iOS 10 release in 2016, is an iPhone feature that uses the mobile device’s built-in accelerometer and gyroscope sensors to recognize when it is lifted from a lower height. When a rising motion is detected, the iPhone’s screen automatically wakes up. The idea is you’ll be able to access anything that appears on your iPhone lock screen without requiring any additional taps or button presses. In addition, you’re only a gesture away from accessing Control Center, being able to take a photo, utilizing your iPhone widgets, or being able to fully unlock your device through FaceID.

An alternative to Raise to Wake is Tap or Swipe to Wake, an iPhone accessibility feature that activates and unlocks your iPhone screen when you tap the display with your finger or swipe up from the bottom edge of the lock screen. In some cases, you may want to disable Tap or Swipe to Wake — for instance, turning it off while you’re out for a run is a good move so your iPhone screen doesn’t accidentally activate in your pocket or running belt when you don’t want it to. On the other hand, it’s most likely better to leave Raise to Wake enabled for convenience purposes because the act of physically raising your iPhone usually indicates an intent to use it. In addition, lifting your device can turn it into a convenient light source when you’re in dark surroundings.

How ‘Raise to Wake’ works on an iPhone

To find out if Raise to Wake is enabled on your iPhone, simply lift the device from a lower level and look at your screen. If it’s turned on, your display should be awake and fully lit. Alternatively, you can follow these steps:

Launch the Settings app.
Go to Display & Brightness.
Check the toggle next to Raise to Wake.

If the switch is green and in the on position, Raise to Wake is enabled on your iPhone. Any time you pick up your device, its display screen should come alive. You’ll be able to quickly glance at it to check the date and time, verify your phone’s battery level, determine cellular signal or Wi-Fi connectivity, or view important notifications among other things, without having to fully unlock the gadget.

Of course, you have the option of leaving the setting disabled by keeping the Raise to Wake toggle grayed out and in the off position. If this is your preference, you’ll need to hit the side button or tap the display to wake up your iPhone screen, provided you have Tap or Swipe to Wake turned on.

Late last year, Nest rolled out in Public Preview the ability to detect an open or closed garage door. The testing must have gone well, as the feature is now rolling out to all Nest Aware subscribers with the necessary equipment.

To work, you don’t need anything fancy, just a compatible Nest Cam device and have it pointed at the garage door from either inside or outside the garage. There’s a whole tutorial on setting it up right here if you need it.

Nest also announced expanded support for first-gen wired Nest Doorbell units in Public Preview. As detailed in its blog post, “Over the next few weeks, we’ll roll out access to Public Preview users with a first-gen wired Nest Doorbell. Once you’ve transferred your doorbell into Public Preview for the Google Home app, you’ll be able to manage it alongside other devices in the Home app and try new features like our updated camera history experience with quick switching between timeline and event list views to review your history.”

These are all good things. If you’re not already enrolled in Public Preview, following the link below for instructions.

NYT Connections: hints and answers for Monday, July 29 https://perkswin.me/nyt-connections-hints-and-answers-for-monday-july-29/ https://perkswin.me/nyt-connections-hints-and-answers-for-monday-july-29/#respond Mon, 29 Jul 2024 08:39:33 +0000 https://perkswin.me/?p=72444

Connections is the latest puzzle game from the New York Times. The game tasks you with categorizing a pool of 16 words into four secret (for now) groups by figuring out how the words relate to each other. The puzzle resets every night at midnight and each new puzzle has a varying degree of difficulty. Just like Wordle, you can keep track of your winning streak and compare your scores with friends.

Some days are trickier than others. If you’re having a little trouble solving today’s Connections puzzle, check out our tips and hints below. And if you still can’t get it, we’ll tell you today’s answers at the very end.

How to play Connections

In Connections, you’ll be shown a grid containing 16 words — your objective is to organize these words into four sets of four by identifying the connections that link them. These sets could encompass concepts like titles of video game franchises, book series sequels, shades of red, names of chain restaurants, etc.

There are generally words that seem like they could fit multiple themes, but there’s only one 100% correct answer. You’re able to shuffle the grid of words and rearrange them to help better see the potential connections.

Each group is color-coded. The yellow group is the easiest to figure out, followed by the green, blue, and purple groups.

Pick four words and hit Submit. If you’re correct, the four words will be removed from the grid and the theme connecting them will be revealed. Guess incorrectly and it’ll count as a mistake. You only have four mistakes available until the game ends.

Hints for today’s Connections

We can help you solve today’s Connection by telling you the four themes. If you need more assistance, we’ll also give you one word from each group below.

Today’s themes

STADIUMS
STREET SUFFICES
ASSOCIATED WITH SCALES
THINGS WITH SPOUTS

One-answer reveals

STADIUMS – ARENA,
STREET SUFFICES – ALLEY
ASSOCIATED WITH SCALES – FISH
THINGS WITH SPOUTS – FOUNTAIN

Today’s Connections answers

Still no luck? That’s OK. This puzzle is designed to be difficult.  If you just want to see today’s Connections answer, we’ve got you covered below:

STADIUMS – ARENA, BOWL, COLISEUM, DOME
STREET SUFFICES – ALLEY, COURT, DRIVE, LANE
ASSOCIATED WITH SCALES – FISH, JUSTICE, LIBRA, SOLFEGE
THINGS WITH SPOUTS – FOUNTAIN, GUTTER, TEAPOT, WHALE

Connections grids vary widely and change every day. If you couldn’t solve today’s puzzle, be sure to check back in tomorrow.

NYT Strands today: hints, spangram and answers for Monday, July 29 https://perkswin.me/nyt-strands-today-hints-spangram-and-answers-for-monday-july-29/ https://perkswin.me/nyt-strands-today-hints-spangram-and-answers-for-monday-july-29/#respond Mon, 29 Jul 2024 08:35:38 +0000 https://perkswin.me/?p=72439

Strands is a brand new daily puzzle from the New York Times. A trickier take on the classic word search, you’ll need a keen eye to solve this puzzle.

Like Wordle, Connections, and the Mini Crossword, Strands can be a bit difficult to solve some days. There’s no shame in needing a little help from time to time. If you’re stuck and need to know the answers to today’s Strands puzzle, check out the solved puzzle below.

How to play Strands

You start every Strands puzzle with the goal of finding the “theme words” hidden in the grid of letters. Manipulate letters by dragging or tapping to craft words; double-tap the final letter to confirm. If you find the correct word, the letters will be highlighted blue and will no longer be selectable.

If you find a word that isn’t a theme word, it still helps! For every three non-theme words you find that are at least four letters long, you’ll get a hint — the letters of one of the theme words will be revealed and you’ll just have to unscramble it.

Every single letter on the grid is used to spell out the theme words and there is no overlap. Every letter will be used once, and only once.

Each puzzle contains one “spangram,” a special theme word (or words) that describe the puzzle’s theme and touches two opposite sides of the board. When you find the spangram, it will be highlighted yellow.

The goal should be to complete the puzzle quickly without using too many hints.

Hint for today’s Strands puzzle

Today’s theme is “Book it!”

Here’s a hint that might help you: Education.

Where Are Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Engines Built? https://perkswin.me/where-are-harley-davidson-motorcycle-engines-built/ https://perkswin.me/where-are-harley-davidson-motorcycle-engines-built/#respond Mon, 29 Jul 2024 08:33:46 +0000 https://perkswin.me/?p=72436

Harley-Davidson is well known for being an American-based motorcycle company that builds some of the best engines and bikes. It’s even made some of the biggest motorcycle engines out there. Sometimes those engines can run upwards of the cost of a whole motorcycle.

Where exactly are those engines made, though? The company’s original Milwaukee, WI-based shed from the early 1900s is long gone, having since become the location of the company’s corporate headquarters. Its factories are instead spread out a bit around the United States, with a location in Pennsylvania and two in Wisconsin.

It doesn’t stop there, however. Harley-Davidson also has a factory in Manaus, Brazil and one in Rayong, Thailand. Having a couple of manufacturing locations that are decidedly not in the U.S. muddies the waters a bit, but Harley-Davidson still says that its engines are assembled right here in America. With the word “assembled” doing a lot of heavy lifting.

Harley-Davidson engine construction

The manufacturing of Harley-Davidson motorcycles is split between a few different factories according to Harley-Davidson, with the York, PA location used for the majority of assembly for CVO, LiveWire (electric), Softail, Sportster, and Touring motorcycles. The Tomahawk, WI factory focuses on sidecars, windshields, and other components. But Menomonee Falls, WI is where the engines are put together.

What makes things tricky to pin down is the fact that not all of the individual parts used in a Harley-Davidson engine are actually manufactured in-house. Wilkins Harley-Davidson explains that many of the components used in Harley-Davidson motorcycles are made in the York factory, however it doesn’t say the same for the Menomonee Falls location. The implication being that while the engines are assembled in the United States, not all of the pieces that make up the engine are.

Harley-Davidson itself doesn’t say much about where the parts that are brought in from outside its factories originate from, but CBS News has previously reported that they’re often sourced from all over the world — something that The Rock Harley-Davidson confirms. In one example in particular, it’s stated that Harley’s engine pistons are actually made in Austria. So, while it’s technically true that Harley-Davidson motorcycles are “made in America,” not all of the individual parts on a given bike can really make that claim.

Here’s More Pixel 9 Pro Fold Renders https://perkswin.me/heres-more-pixel-9-pro-fold-renders/ https://perkswin.me/heres-more-pixel-9-pro-fold-renders/#respond Mon, 29 Jul 2024 08:31:31 +0000 https://perkswin.me/?p=72433

Need more looks at the upcoming Pixel 9 Pro Fold to help you decide if it will be your next phone purchase? The internet delivers, as always.

Thanks to @Onleaks and 91mobiles, we have more images of Google’s new foldable, complete with different colors and angles. We see the device in the Obsidian option, as well as Porcelain. We also get a great look at both the backside and frontside of the device.

Expected to be powered by Google’s Tensor G4 chipset, Pixel 9 Pro Fold features a 6.3-inch cover display and 8-inch Super Actua Flex display on the inside. Comparing that to the original, which has a 5.8-inch cover and 7.6-inch OLED inner display, we’re getting a few size upgrades here.

The overall symmetrical appearance of the device is quite nice, if we’re being honest. Google has also pushed the interior selfie camera up into the right corner, which looks good. Compared to the first generation Pixel Fold, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold looks like an absolute step in the right direction in terms of design polish.

August 13 can’t come soon enough.

Is The Kawasaki Mule Street Legal? https://perkswin.me/is-the-kawasaki-mule-street-legal/ https://perkswin.me/is-the-kawasaki-mule-street-legal/#respond Mon, 29 Jul 2024 08:29:13 +0000 https://perkswin.me/?p=72430

While there’s a lot of enjoyment to be had in flying down the highway at appropriately high speeds and going for a slower cruise around town streets, off-roading is another kind of fun. Navigating trails and taking in all of nature’s scenery is a blast — so long as you keep a few important factors in mind before setting out on your first off-road adventure. One of the most fun and reliable vehicles one can take off the beaten path is the Kawasaki MULE (Multi-Use Light Equipment), which is tailor-made for off-roading and can go pretty fast.

The first MULE, the MULE 1000, was introduced back in 1988, and in the decades since, the MULE has become a favorite among workers and off-roaders alike. Each subsequent model of Kawasaki’s now-adored utility task vehicle has improved upon the last, with more power, stronger maneuverability, and increased cab size in each, to name a few of the MULE’s key innovations. To celebrate 30 years of the MULE, Kawasaki delivered two brand new models for customers to try out: the 2018 MULE PRO-FXR and the 2018 MULE 4000 Trans, each with their own sets of bells and whistles to pull potential buyers in.

Considering how powerful and large the Kawasaki MULE has become over the years, evoking the image of a toned-down Jeep, one has to wonder, are they street legal? Here’s what you need to know.

[Featured image by Hunini via WikiMedia Commons | Cropped and scaled | CC BY-SA 4.0]

The Kawasaki MULE isn’t road ready everywhere

When looking over the official Kawasaki website’s MULE section, it’s abundantly clear from the images and text that these vehicles are intended almost exclusively for off-roading. They’re advertised as best-suited for carrying large payloads across worksites, taking on rugged terrain, and embarking on off-road excursions. Digging deeper, manufacturer labels explicitly state that MULEs are sold for off-road use only. Additionally, they fail to meet the United States’ Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards in more ways than one, from their lack of rearview mirrors to missing windshields.

However, that’s not to say that they can’t be used on any roadways at all. Even though MULEs aren’t street legal on a federal level, state and local laws vary on the matter. In more mountainous and rural areas, you might be able to get by with brief trips with a Slow Moving Vehicle sign, but that’s no guarantee. If you’re curious about the legalities surrounding MULEs on the road in your area, it’s in your best interest to do some research into your local regulations before hitting the road. Also, you’ll probably want to look into kits and components to make your MULE street legal, to further ensure you’re on the right side of the law.

Alternatively, if you want something you know you can safely and legally drive on the road and off, you could always set your sights on one of the many new vehicles that are ready to go off-roading fresh off the lot.

Pixel 9 Pro’s ‘Add Me’ Feature Looks Slick https://perkswin.me/pixel-9-pros-add-me-feature-looks-slick/ https://perkswin.me/pixel-9-pros-add-me-feature-looks-slick/#respond Mon, 29 Jul 2024 08:29:09 +0000 https://perkswin.me/?p=72427

Earlier today, what appeared to be an ad for the Pixel 9 Pro hit YouTube, detailing select features on the flagship device. Google must not have been too happy, as that video has since been taken down. We got screenshots, though.

While Google highlighted Gemini and Pixel Screenshots, the feature that most caught our eye was Add Me, a new toy for Pixel camera users to play with. With it, you can take a photo of friends, then those same friends can take a photo of you, with the Pixel 9 Pro able to combine the two photos into a single photo of the entire group.

When using Add Me, the second photo getting taken shows a ghost of the first image, allowing you to perfectly frame yourself for the second shot. It’s really quite slick.

Obviously it would be much more cool if you could see the video, but Google had it removed. We’ll try to find a reupload and add it if we can.
